Today we sat down with data-driven marketer Brett Westerman to learn more about his life as a strategic digital marketer and father of two.
What’s your role as a Torchliter?
I am a Strategic Lead for one of my clients and have a specialty in digital PPC advertising.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with the kids (my son is 6, and my daughter is 3) doing art projects and playing in the yard. Any other downtime I have is spent running and reading as many books as time allows, both fiction and nonfiction (a healthy balance between the genres keeps my brain flexible). For evenings that require extreme chill, I enjoy HD-video nature documentaries, like the Planet Earth series or Blue Earth before that.
Where do you live and what’s your favorite part about your hometown?
New Palestine, IN, which is around 35 minutes southeast of downtown Indianapolis. Prior to becoming a Hoosier 5 years ago, I had spent life as a Buckeye, living throughout Ohio in Toledo, Dayton, and Cincinnati. Despite the labels, these states really are quite similar with solid, down-to-earth folks.
What was the last trip you took?
Relaxed at a B&B in New Orleans recently (not for Mardi Gras) with my wife and good friends, really with a primary focus on eating great food. Fun fact – they have a massive St. Patty’s parade where fresh produce is thrown from the floats into the crowd (cabbage, carrots, potatoes), which apparently used to be a legitimate tradition back in the day helping the neighborhood after difficult winter months.
What was the last book you read?
“The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Holiday, which shares a practical approach to dealing with adversity, and even thriving because of it.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
Any of my extended family that came before me but I was never able to meet. I’m sure they would enjoy the dinner as well, speaking with their future great-great-etc-grandson.
What’s one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
The day before proposing to my wife in Chicago 10 years ago, I hit her with my car while trying to parallel park in Wrigleyville. She still married me.
How did you get into freelancing?
After a few years of agency life in Cincinnati, I always had the bug for digital project work and have helped clients on nights & weekends while full-time employed. I saw the opportunity to grow that work into something more sustainable, along with a few other ventures, and appreciated the flexibility to spend more time with the kids.
What does your typical day look like?
While the goal is always to “eat the frog first thing in the morning” – Mark Twain and tackle the most difficult task, this often gets side-tracked by pressing and unforeseen issues. Blocking off my day into mini-sprints helps partition energy to certain clients or projects with full focus before transitioning. Having my day book-ended by commuting the kids to/from school helps divide my attention between the professional and personal.
How do you stay up-to-date on the latest digital marketing trends?
Following the official outlets from Google always provides the best sourcing, while industry blogs on SEO, SEM, and all things digital helps creative thinking. Podcasts have been my latest vehicle to stay current, with no shortage of industry leaders eager to share their ideas. My favorite right now is Marketing Over Coffee with weekly episodes that cover the digital spectrum and usually run less than 20 minutes, so easily digestible on a short commute or during lunch.
What’s your favorite part about working with Torchlite?
Aside from the wonderful and welcoming staffers, frankly it’s great to work on projects without the heavy biz-dev work that very often involves many pitches but few clients landed. They also excel at nurturing their freelance network, whether through Slack correspondence related to projects, the industry, or pictures of puppies, or providing meetup opportunities for freelancers to gather and share ideas.
