Torchliter Spotlight: Rachel Smith

Torchliters are digital marketing experts who deliver high-quality work to our customers. Marketing is their passion and their livelihood. So yeah, they’re pretty darn good at what they do.

Today we sat down with Torchliter Rachel Smith to learn more about her active life as a freelance social media manager and part-time group cycle instructor.

What’s your role as a Torchliter and which clients do you work with?

I am a social media manager as well as a Strategic Lead for Torchlite clients.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to spend time with my husband and son, as well as spend time outdoors as much as possible! We have a vegetable garden, flowers, and we just recently bought 4 baby chicks to raise for eggs!

Where do you live and what’s your favorite part about your hometown?

I live in Indianapolis, IN. I was born and raised here, and although I found it boring when I was younger, I now appreciate the fact that I can live in a town with good schools, affordable housing, and I still find plenty of fun things to do!

What was the last trip you took?

My last in-state trip was hiking in Morgan-Monroe State Forest in April 2017. The last time I went out of the state was to Portland, Oregon in October 2017 to visit my brother and his family!

What was the last book you read?

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?

Hard to pick just one! Right now, I’ll say Justin Trudeau. I respect his views, and I’ll admit, he’s not bad to look at 😉

What’s one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?

I have worked part-time for the YMCA of Indianapolis for 11 years in many different roles!

How did you get into freelancing?

In 2015, I quit my full-time job without having a new job (kind of scary!) but ended up finding part-time freelance work later on. I realized how much I loved it and decided to look into doing it more. I knew a bit about Torchlite and started looking into becoming a Torchliter. I applied and started getting some great work in 2016!

What does your typical day look like?

I wake up, take my son to school, then come back home and slowly start my day. I am NOT a morning person, so I am very lucky to not have to rush into things right away. I check/get caught up on emails and try to get to any work that needs to be done. I like to take an hour each day to get some exercise in – lately I’ve been stepping outside my comfort zone and taking a pilates class at the Y once a week. I’m not very good at it, but I am determined to get better! Some days I work from home and others I will go to a co-working space – it all depends on my mood or what else I have going on that day. In the afternoon is when I tend to get a lot more work done. I feel much more energized and creative at that time! I get to spend the evening with my family, and then always have late nights to work if I need to!

How do you stay up-to-date on the latest digital marketing trends?

I follow sites such as Marketing Land and Entrepreneur.com. I also like to stay connected to the Torchliters on Slack because there always seems to be great conversations going on there!

What’s your favorite part about working with Torchlite?

My favorite part is the community. Working as a freelancer can get lonely. Having a community to reach out to, locally or online, makes me feel like I have a group I can turn to with questions or when I need advice. Or just to share cute pet pictures!
